Tuning Fork Based SPM Probes (NN-QTF)

NaugaNeedles now offers tuning fork based probes for atomic force microscopy. By growing Ag2Ga nanoneedle on the edge of the fork prong, a sharp point is formed. Upon customer request we can attach the nanoneedle along or parallel to the fork or at any arbitrary angle. As shown in figure (a-c) the nanoneedle is located vertical to the fork. Using proper insulating and metallic coating, we can make QPlus sensors that can detect the tunneling current during the AFM scan. For that, prior to nanoneedle attachment, the entire quartz fork is coated with an insulating material. Then, the top of one of the prong is coated with metal and the needle is attached to the edge of the metal coated prong. The metal coating provide the electrical connection to the tip for tunneling current readout (in figure c, it is shown as the gold pad) and two the electrodes (in Figure c, it is displayed as the red and blue electrode) are used to read the QPlus current. Since the amount of mass added to the fork is minimal, the resonance frequency spectrum does not change. As shown in Figure (d) the resonance frequency of the tuning fork is still around 32.6 KHz and the Q factor is around 1,200 in ambient condition. The sharpness of the Ag2Ga nanoneedle makes it possible to increase the AFM scan resolution.
